Abstract

The National Robotics Initiative (NRI) was launched 2011 and has just celebrated its 5 year anniversary. The foundation for the program was the US National Roadmap for Robotics. The document outlines major research challenges in manufacturing, services, healthcare, defense and space. The first version was published 2009 and it was revised 2013. The week of the Contextual Robotics Forum we plan to release the 3rd edition of the National Robotics Roadmap. The roadmap has been updated based on two meetings in Portland, OR and Atlanta, GA. In this presentation we will discuss the main challenges and opportunities identified in the roadmap and at the end outline how this relates to the activities planned for the Contextual Robotics Institute at UC San Diego.
